During this time of crisis, when policymakers and citizens are listening closely to the advice of scientists, trust in the integrity of research and scientific evidence has never been more important. Policymakers and the public must have confidence that scientists have acted with honesty, and have adhered to principles of rigour, transparency and openness in conducting their research.

But what happens when there is apparent scientific misconduct, such as when early-career researchers observe more senior colleagues possibly engaging in falsifying data or fabricating results? What processes are in place to address potential problems of malpractice? What actions might be taken, at individual, institutional and government levels to facilitate the process of investigation and, where necessary, protect those involved?
