But what happens when there is apparent scientific misconduct, such as when early-career researchers observe more senior colleagues possibly engaging in falsifying data or fabricating results? What processes are in place to address potential problems of malpractice? What actions might be taken, at individual, institutional and government levels to facilitate the process of investigation and, where necessary, protect those involved?
